Paolo Banchero scored 24 points and AJ Griffin had 22 as the freshmen carried No. 8 Duke to a 76-64 road victory over Wake Forest Wednesday night in Winston-Salem, N.C.

Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski missed the game with a non-COVID illness. Associate head coach Jon Scheyer, who will become the Blue Devils' coach in the spring after Krzyzewski retires, filled in.

Duke (13-2, 3-1 ACC) bounced back from Saturday night's home loss to Miami.

Griffin made his first start and hit eight of 11 shots from the field, including three 3-pointers.

Trevor Keels added 11 points for Duke, which was playing in its second true road game of the season. It lost the first one at Ohio State.

Alondes Williams poured in 25 points on 11-for-21 shooting for Wake Forest, outscoring the other four starters (who had a total of 23 points). He also supplied seven rebounds and four assists.

Jake LaRavia had 14 points for Wake Forest (13-4, 3-3), which entered the game with a 10-0 record in home games. It was billed as one of the biggest games for Wake Forest in a decade because of the team's strong start to this season.

The Demon Deacons shot 2-for-16 on 3-pointers, while Duke was 7-for-15 from deep.

Wake Forest committed 15 turnovers to Duke's seven.

Duke used a 14-1 run to begin the second half to take command. Shortly after that, the lead grew to 55-35 with 14:34 to play before Wake Forest strung together nine straight points.

Duke rebuilt its advantage to 20 points at 67-47 with 7:37 left.

The Blue Devils shot 50.8 percent from the field.

Wake Forest had guard Daivien Williamson back after a three-game absence related to COVID protocol. He scored six points off the bench, all on free throws.

Duke hit two 3-pointers in the final 20 seconds of the first half for a 35-29 edge. LaRavia, who had three first-half fouls, didn't score in the first half.
