As Sporting Kansas City gets ready to host the Colorado Rapids in a battle for second place in the Western Conference on Wednesday night, they will look to correct a run of missed opportunities of late.

Sporting KC (5-3-2, 17 points) has taken 51 shots in its last two games -- at home to Austin FC and then on the road against the Portland Timbers. But they have converted only two of those shots into goals, including one score on 32 shots against Austin FC on June 12.

"In the game (against Austin) that goalkeeper (Brad Stuver) stood on his head and played very well. You can't take that away from that guy," Sporting KC manager Peter Vermes said following the 2-1 loss to Portland.

"I think (Saturday against the Timbers) we missed a couple of really good chances. There's nothing you can say when you look at the way we played. I get it; it's all about winning. Outside of losing the game, I feel really good about the fact that the guys are in synch with each other. The quality in which we play is very good. It's got to get results."

Colorado (5-2-1, 16 points) is riding a two-match winning streak with consecutive shutouts and five goals scored in the two games combined. The second of those wins came on the road, a 2-0 victory at FC Cincinnati to follow international break.

"The determination and the fight of every guy was incredible tonight," goalkeeper William Yarbrough said. "Coming off the break, sometimes it's hard to get into the rhythm on things, and I think we proved we're on the right track mentally. I'm so proud of this group and how everyone fought for 90 minutes, left everything out there."

In 81 all-time games between the teams, Sporting KC holds a narrow advantage 33-29-19 across all competitions, including a 27-24-16 advantage in the MLS regular season.
